Rehabilitation of a 95 km road to bitumen standard, part of the Northern Transport Corridor project funded jointly by the European Union and the Kenyan Government. The project importance could not be understated with it being the part of the main transport corridor from the Port of Mombasa to Western Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Eastern DRC.
The project comprised of complete reconstruction involving removal of the existing bitumen and stabilized layers as well as widening the carriageway.
Major works executed comprised mainly of:
- Construction of Earthworks - 679,000 m3
- Cement stabilized sub-base and base - 345,000 m3
- Laying of GCS - 167,000m3
- Construction of pipe culverts, bridges, box culverts and other drainage works.
- Protection works using stone pitching and gabions
- Provision of road furniture including road marking and traffic signs
- Three rail over bridges were constructed at the Mai Mahiu-Naivasha-Lanet Road. The bridges have helped curb accidents that used to occur in the past at level crossings
President Kibaki officially opened the road on 18th October 2008.
