The Machakos Turnoff – Masii lies to the south east of Nairobi. For the purpose of rehabilitation the project was divided into four sections with the total project length being 78 km.
Section 1 involved complete reconstruction involving removal of the existing bitumen and stabilized layers as well as widening the carriageway by 1.5m. Section 2 - 4 involved repairing of failed pavement layers and resealing of the road.
Major works executed comprised mainly of:
- Construction of Earthworks - 387,000 m3
- Cement stabilized sub-base and base - 74,000 m3
- Application of 50mm of Asphalt Concrete type 1 & 2 - 17,900m3
- Construction of pipe culverts, bridges, box culverts and other drainage works.
- Protection works using stone pitching and gabions
- Provision of road furniture including road marking and traffic signs
